Music as a Stress-Coping Tool
Music’s therapeutic healing power often extends beyond our understanding. Even in times of high stress, it helps us to carry on with our days. It's not at all uncommon to hear someone say, "that music lifted my spirits!"
We do know that like other disciplines, music reaches deep into our psychological constructs and releases beta-endorphins which make us feel good. Whether you participate in sing-alongs with your family, attend concerts with friends or blast music in your car on your drive home from work, it is important to find what works and is effective for you. Music is a very personal experience that connects us with our emotions and thoughts. Listening to new music also opens our minds up to a greater sense of community and healing.
Horizon's Music Therapy Team continues to conduct music therapy visits with patients through technology. Not even a pandemic with social distancing can interrupt music's impact!
The current COVID-19 pandemic is stressful for everyone. While we all have different musical tastes, the Horizon Music Therapy Team shares their go-to "feel-good" music in the hope that it brings you comfort.
- Rory - 60s rock (like The Rolling Stones or “Get Ready” by The Temptations) and any Elton John or Billy Joel tunes
- Lisa - “Hills and Valleys” by Tauren Wells, and any song by Tim McGraw
- Kate - Metallica (try their “Symphony & Metallica” album to enjoy the sweet guitar licks combined with the cello)
