A Meal and a Moment

Horizon is kicking off an eight-week social media campaign to increase awareness around all the wonderful benefits of our Meals on Wheels program. To the residents of Milwaukee County, Meals on Wheels is so much more than a meal, its a meaningful moment of connection between our volunteers (we call them drivers) and the recipient of the meal.

“Meals on Wheels helps me a lot when I don’t have food prepared or don’t feel well on some days. The volunteers always have a happy face and show a lot of compassion. You can tell this is something they enjoy and take pride in.” – Meals on Wheels Client

In today’s fast-paced world, ensuring our elderly neighbors and those with disabilities have access to nutritious meals often falls through the cracks. Meals on Wheels steps in to fill this critical gap, delivering more than just food—it brings comfort, companionship, and a sense of dignity. It’s more then a delivered meal, it’s a moment.

Meals on Wheels is more than a meal delivery service; it’s a lifeline for many. The Horizon Meals on Wheels program provides:

1. Nutritious Meals: Balanced meals tailored to dietary needs, ensuring recipients get the nourishment they require.
2. Safety Checks: Regular visits provide peace of mind to families, knowing someone is checking in on their loved ones.
3. Companionship: Volunteers often become trusted friends, reducing feelings of isolation and loneliness.

The statistics paint a sobering picture: millions of seniors face poor nutrition and social isolation daily. Meals on Wheels combats these challenges, helping recipients maintain their independence and quality of life. Studies show that consistent meal delivery can:

  • Reduce hospital readmissions.

  • Lower healthcare costs by improving overall health.

  • Enhance emotional well-being.

Meet Mary, an 82-year-old widow living alone with limited mobility, which made grocery shopping impossible. Meals on Wheels not only ensures Mary has nutritious food, but also provides her with a volunteer named Joe, her Meals on Wheels driver. Joe’s visits are the highlight of Mary’s day, giving her something to look forward to and easing her sense of loneliness.

Meals on Wheels serves as a beacon of hope, and ensures no one in our community goes hungry or forgotten. Whether through volunteering, donating, or simply sharing its message, each of us can play a part in this life-changing mission. Together, we can bring comfort to the table for those who need it most.
